Lesson Plan Overview

Level: B1 and B2

Topic: Food and Cultural Differences

Objective: To promote language development, critical thinking, and intercultural awareness through the exploration of the Devon-Cornwall cream debate.

Warm-up: Spark curiosity with a fun activity linking childhood pet names and last food eaten. Encourage sharing experiences and cultural differences. Then, set a timer for students to brainstorm various food items, discussing regional variations. Students then compare their lists and talk about foods that are not common in their region. Ask open-ended questions such as “How does food reflect cultural identity?”

Lead-In: At this stage, student will answer some questions about their own eating habits. Encourage students to compare and complement each other’s ideas.

Main Activity: The Devon-Cornwall Cream Debate (150 words):

1. First, explore common food debates, prompting students to share opinions and argue preferences. Ask, “Can you think of any famous food debates?”

2. After that, introduce the Devon-Cornwall debate showing the location of the two cities and what the whole debate consists on. Provide them with a short video explaining the Devon-Cornwall cream debate. Highlight the different perspectives and historical context surrounding the topic. Encourage students to take notes and underline unfamiliar vocabulary.

3. Watch a video where a dog settles the debate, predicting and discussing the aftermath of its choice.
